Dr. Alexander Coon is recognized as one of the world’s leading vascular neurosurgeons. He currently serves as Director of Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery at both the Carondelet Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s Hospitals in Tucson, Arizona, as well as the Abrazo West and Abrazo Arrowhead Hospitals in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Coon previously spent 15 years at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he founded and led the Endovascular Neurosurgery service, growing it into one of the largest programs in the nation. He served as Director of Endovascular Neurosurgery across all Johns Hopkins Medicine and held academic appointments in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Radiology, and Neurology. During this time, he trained ten (10) fellows in the field of Neurointerventional Surgery, many of whom have gone on to esteemed positions across the country (UCLA, Johns Hopkins, etc.). He continued this tradition of training excellence here in Arizona by establishing and directing the Carondelet Neurointerventional Fellowship in 2022. Since its inception, the program has trained three (3) fellows in the discipline of neurointerventional surgery. Internationally known for his expertise in the endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms, Dr. Coon specializes in the use of flow-diverting stents (Pipeline and Surpass) and intra-saccular flow disrupters (WEB). He has performed or proctored over 2,000 aneurysm cases and has trained hundreds of physicians across the U.S. and abroad in these advanced techniques. A prolific academic, Dr. Coon has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and delivered over 150 lectures on five continents. He has played key roles in numerous multi-center FDA clinical trials and currently serves as the Global PI for the upcoming GUARD study (Surpass Flow Diverter), the PMA trial for FDA approval of the first-ever drug-coated brain stent. He performed the only First in Human (FIH) flow diverting stent implantation in the USA at Carondelet St. Joseph’s in 2021. Dr. Coon’s clinical expertise spans the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernous malformations, and dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) of the brain and spinal cord. He also specializes in the management of carotid artery stenosis, acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and moyamoya disease. He utilizes special techniques to endovascularly manage chronic subdural hematomas (cSDH) using MMA embolization. He routinely performs diagnostic cerebral and spinal angiography for all vascular pathologies. His practice also includes the treatment of spinal disorders, neurological trauma, brain tumors, and hydrocephalus. Together with his team at the Carondelet Neurological Institute and Abrazo Brain and Spine, Dr. Coon leads one of the most experienced cerebrovascular programs in the Western United States—particularly in the management of complex cerebral aneurysms, cSDH, AVMs, and stroke thrombectomies. Outside of medicine, Dr. Coon is an endurance athlete. He has completed 22 Ironman triathlon events and four Alaskan mountaineering expeditions. He is an avid car enthusiast and enjoys cycling, hiking, and golfing with his wife of 22 years, Laura, and their two children, Alex (15) and Elizabeth (10).
